ABOUT US

The Alumni Association

The association was organized in September 1986, and by August 1987 the IRS had granted us a 501(c)(3) status of a non-profit organization.  This made donations and memorials tax-free.  The group set its goals to support the school with financial aid and to encourage alumni support for various projects.

Early projects included the Coach J. D. Cox Roast and the very successful Ultimate Reunion in June of 1987 along with the first “Hall of Fame” Luncheon.  In 1994 there was a fund raising drive to refurbish a dismal concrete area off of the cafeteria.  This became a lovely landscaped area to honor former Assistant Principal Charles Ravenna. During the following years hundreds of alums worked on plans for the Ultimate Reunion II.   This was 3 days of great events drawing thousands of alumni back to “The Hive” in 1996.  Since then the Alumni Association has sponsored the 75th Birthday celebration of Byrd.  As a birthday gift to the school, the Alumni Association raised $109,000 to refurbish the school auditorium with new drapes, curtains, carpeting, new lighting, and a new sound system.  Lately, the Alumni have sponsored several alumni dances known as “Keep the Hive Alive.”  We have funded teacher grants, student travel funds for distant conferences, additional computers, security cameras, and many other items. Dues are $25.00 a year.  Lifetime Memberships are $250.00.  The dues go to pay for our alumni office expenses.  All alumni office workers and alumni Board of Directors are volunteers.

Hello Jacket Alumni,

With the Beginning of a new school year comes a new slate of officers for our Alumni Association.

I am honored to have been elected as President of the Board of Directors for the 2019-2020 term and it is our hope that we will be able to continue to be as effective in the support of C. E. Byrd as have past administrations.

The City of Byrd is a unique institution as it serves not only as an educational facility for class room subjects but also and equally important as a real-life laboratory.  It is also a place in which we did a lot of growing up and accompanied by gentle nudges from our teachers to keep heading in the right direction.  Lessons learned in the classroom and about life along with forging forever friendships while attending Byrd, have benefited long after we graduated.  The Alumni Association, through your dues and donations, tries to make a small paycheck to Byrd for these past and present contributions.

Some of our major goals and challenges for the upcoming year are the initiation of quarterly emails to our Alumni. keeping you updated on the latest happenings with the school and Alumni Association and bringing our Alumni community closer together.  If we don't have your email or you are not sure if we have the correct one,  please email us at byrdhighalumni@gmail.com and get on the mailing list.

We are also updating the Alumni database as keeping track of over 40,000 alums is a bit beyond

what you can do with a legal pad and a #2 pencil.

The Association meets on a quarterly basis at the school and all alumni are welcome to attend.  Check out our website for meeting dates and times.

And lastly, the Alumni Association is your Association.  The Board of Directors is made up of volunteer Alumni which represent a true cross section of the population of Byrd Alums.  We have those that participate in sports, ROTC, the Pep Squad and Drum Corp along with those that excelled in Academics and at least one member (rumored to be the author of this letter) that had to attend four sessions of summer school in order to graduated.

And, lets not forget

WE ARE THE JACKETS BEST OF ALL!
